This program is designed to lead students through a series of increasingly sophisticated and complex approaches to literature. It features small classes, in which students focus on literature, learn to read sensitively, and develop important skills in writing, critical thinking, and detailed textual analysis. Students are encouraged to take advantage of one-on-one conferencing, and professors get to know their students well. British and American literature provide the principal subject matter through which students learn literary analysis and develop their knowledge of literary history. The program offers a wide variety of elective courses in literature, creative writing and linguistics. English students are able to use their critical thinking and communication skills in internship opportunities on and off campus. Graduates of the English program go on to a wide range of positions in both the private and the public sectors and to graduate school.

Distribution Requirements: of the 300-level and 400-level courses, one must be in American literature, and one must be in British literature. For students who take ENG 251H to satisfy the British Texts and Contexts requirement, the advanced British course must be post-1798. For students who take ENG 252H to satisfy the British Texts and Contexts requirement, the advanced British course must be pre-1798. Each semester at pre-registration, an official list of courses meeting these distribution requirements will be circulated to advisors and students.

Note: A creative writing course may be substituted for the open literature elective.
