This degree is designed for students previously enrolled in one of UMF's teacher education programs who realize that they no longer wish to pursue teacher certification. Students will complete extensive coursework in education, as well as in an additional discipline outside education. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
The student receiving this degree earns 128 credits in courses of her or his choice, with the following provisions:
1) The student applying for the Bachelor of General Studies with a concentration in Education Studies degree program must currently be enrolled in a UMF Education program. (S)he must have earned 88 credits, including 24 credits in Education, if previously majoring in ECE, ECS, ELE or SED, and 16 credits in education if (s)he was previously majoring in secondary education.
2) All education courses must have been taken within the last 7 years.
3) The student indicates an additional discipline outside of education when applying for the degree.
4) The student must earn at least 20 credits in the companion discipline.
5) The student must earn at least 20 credits in course work at the 300-400 level, drawn from any discipline.
6) A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for graduation.
7) A Committee comprised of faculty from the College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation must approve the BGS: ES proposal.
8) BGS: ES majors are required to complete general education requirements, but they are not required to complete a foreign language requirement.
General Education Requirements
The total number of credits required to fulfill requirements will differ depending on courses you select; your advisor will help you choose courses that are appropriate to your program and your interests. UMF's general education requirements also include expectations related to writing skills, technology skills, research skills, and public presentation skills. You will typically satisfy these requirements through your normal coursework in general education and your major.
