This program encourages students to step outside their own cultural and social experiences to examine past events from a fresh perspective, realizing there are multiple ways to view historical events and their impact on the present and future. Working with faculty mentors in small classes, students may select a variety of hands-on experiences, including identifying and utilizing primary historical sources; collecting oral histories; assisting local historical societies; traveling to historical sites; and taking part in a live-in experience at Norlands (a working 1870's farm). Many students also participate in the Student History Society and Civil War Society. Faculty encourage them to create links with other disciplines, such as geography, anthropology, political science, and international and women's studies, in order to understand their historical dimensions. Students are well prepared for careers in the public or private sectors or to go on to graduate study in the social sciences or humanities.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Students must complete forty-four (44) credit hours spread over five categories. Students are required to complete two courses, of their choosing, in categories I, II, III, and IV, for a total of eight (8) classes, and thirty-two (32) credit hours. Category V consists of twelve (12) additional credits in history courses of the students' choosing. Students must also have a grade of C- or better for the courses to count towards to completion of the major requirements.
