Bachelor of Arts: Interdisciplinary Studies, concentration in philosophy/religion

This program offers an individualized course of study centering on the history of philosophy and religion, the study of knowledge, and of what we take to be reality. It examines key assumptions that underlie our thinking, the range of human thought about the universe, and humanity's place within the universe. It includes the historical and comparative study of the world's religions, ethics, and the role of religion in society. Students gain valuable analytical, problem solving, and synthesizing skills and are able to understand how knowledge from many areas fits together to inform their thinking about life's most fundamental questions. The flexible curriculum allows students to study philosophy and religion in combination with other courses to provide a strong background for those planning on a career in law, higher education, or business The required courses in PHI convey what we feel the essence of an undergraduate major to be, and match the courses recommended by the American Philosophical Association: PHI 120H, 130H, 140H, and 150H give the student familiarity with the leading thinkers and classic texts in the history of philosophy; PHI 200H, 201, 202, and 203 give the student familiarity with the basic sub-fields of philosophy; and the 300-level course gives the student a sense of the nature of the discipline as a whole, either by exploring a particular topic to the front-lines of current research, or by exploring the boundaries of philosophy vis-`-vis some other discipline.
