This NCATE-certified program combines a professional teaching preparation curriculum with a liberal arts concentration in English. Education methods courses, a semester-long sophomore practicum, and a semester of student teaching put UMF students in the classroom early in their program and often. Tutoring on campus, working in the campus writing lab or in the Writing Assistants program, and volunteering in local schools provide more opportunities to gain experience teaching English in a variety of settings. Students are prepared to teach English (grades 7 to 12), to enter an English-related career field, or to pursue graduate study in education or English. Students wishing to earn a Middle Level Teacher Endorsement can take additional courses in a second content area and the Middle School Education course.

Distribution requirements:

(1) Of the three elective 300-level and 400-level courses, one must be in American literature, and one must be in British literature. For students who take ENG 251 to satisfy the British Texts and Contexts requirement, the advanced British course must be post-1798. For students who take ENG 252 to satisfy the British Texts and Contexts requirement, the advanced British course must be pre-1798.

(2) Of the four elective courses in literature, one must be a course in multicultural literature.

Each semester at preregistration, an official list of courses meeting these distribution requirements will be circulated to advisors and students.
