This NCATE-certified program combines two areas of study: 1) the formal study of education, with preparation for a teaching certificate in secondary social studies [all social studies courses grades 7-12], and 2) an arts and sciences concentration in social studies with course work in several of the social sciences and a specialization in either history, geography, or political science. The education area of study includes two assignments in secondary and/or middle schools, including a sophomore practicum experience and a senior year student teaching experience. This program prepares students to become secondary/middle social studies teachers, to enter a social science-related career field, or to pursue graduate work in either education or in their social science area of specialization.

Sixteen credits in four different disciplines, courses with the following prefixes:

ANT, ECO, GEO, POS, PSY, and SOC. Upper level courses at the 200 level and above in anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, and sociology, will also fulfill this requirement, as long as students take courses in four disciplines. Please note that the psychology course required of secondary education majors, PSY 225S, will count towards fulfilling this requirement. (Interdisciplinary social science courses, such as Honors courses, may fulfill this requirement if these particular interdisciplinary courses are accepted by the Secondary/Middle Education Department as meeting their program requirements.)
