Students work with faculty, who are practicing writers, in workshop-style classes to discover and develop their writing strengths in the genres of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Small classes, an emphasis on individual conferencing, and the development of a writing portfolio allow students to see themselves as artists and refine their writing under the guidance of accomplished and published faculty mentors. Students gain real-world experience writing for campus publications, working as interns at Alice James Books (the award-winning poetry publishing house located on campus), and assisting area newspapers, printing companies, and advertising firms. Students go on to careers in areas such as publishing, advertising, public relations, and journalism or to graduate programs at such universities as Cornell, Columbia, Virginia, and Michigan.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

Sixteen credits (four courses) in writing, selected from the following:

ENG 215 Writing for Children and Young Adults

ENG 218 Writing for the Stage or Film

ENG 310 Advanced Fiction Writing (may be taken twice)

ENG 311 Advanced Poetry Writing (may be taken twice)

ENG 312 Advanced Nonfiction Writing (may be taken twice)

Of these sixteen credits, at least eight credits (two courses) must be taken in advanced creative writing courses (ENG 310, ENG 311, ENG 312),with work in two genres required.
