Bachelor of Arts: Interdisciplinary Studies, concentration in geology/chemistry

This program combines solid work in geology with an opportunity to concentrate in organic, physical or analytical chemistry. It involves students in hands-on research, field work and lab work. Field trips in geology take advantage of the nearby mountains and coastal areas of Maine, as well as extended summer experiences in venues such as Scotland, Ireland, Newfoundland, Alaska and the Grand Canyon. Students focus on their own special areas of interest from water quality to toxic waste disposal and work closely with faculty mentors. They are encouraged to design their own research, apply classroom learning to their fieldwork, and present their findings in the private and public sectors at places like the Maine State Department of Environmental Protection, the Office of GIS, and private oil companies. They have gone on to such graduate schools as Rice, LSU, and the University of Tennessee.
