  ART 110A - Introduction to Digital Media
This Course will examine the computer as an art-making tool. Students will get an overview of software programs used to create still and time-based media in the studio setting with an emphasis on how these media impact individuals and the culture at large. Once every two years.

  ART 112A - 2-D Design on the Computer
Fundamentals of 2-D Design and introduction to the computer as a design tool. Series of exercises and applied problems in visual organization; study includes line, texture, shape, size, space and color theory. The course will help students improve the appearance of visual projects done on or off the computer. Every semester.

  ART 113A - Three-Dimensional Design
A studio course with emphasis on the fundamentals of three-dimensional design. Every semester.

  ART 115A - Drawing I
An introduction to the basic principles, techniques and materials of drawing. Emphasis on drawing as a means of seeing and recording the physical world. The role of drawing in visual communication and creative exploration will also be emphasized. Every semester.

  ART 177A - Special Topics in Art
Intensive study of a single artist, genre, or special topic. Subjects and focus will vary depending on the topic. Variable.

  ART 212A - Design II
Students will apply their knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign in creating design projects like business cards, letterhead, envelope designs, and advertisements.  Students will complete the design process from concept to printed piece. Prerequisite(s): ART 112A or ART 110A. Once a year.

  ART 215 - Drawing II
Builds on principles and techniques encountered in Drawing I. Introduction to figure drawing, basic color theory, and mixed-media. Individual concepts and personal expression developed. Prerequisite(s): ART 115A. Every year.

  ART 219A - Sculpture
A course that looks at the evolution of form and the content or meaning of sculpture. There will be selection, manipulation, and exploitation of materials such as clay, wood, metal, plaster, wax, fabric, light, and found objects. Every year.

  ART 221 - Painting I
Introduction to painting fundamentals and techniques working with acrylic or oil paint. Emphasis on color theory, creative design and expression. Through discussion, demonstration and practice, the student becomes acquainted with the physical and conceptual problems of traditional and contemporary painting. Prerequisite(s): ART 115A or Permission of instructor. Every semester.

  ART 235 - Photography I
An introduction to the techniques and aesthetics of photography including lighting, exposure, composition, developing, and enlarging of black and white photographs. (A materials fee will be charged.) Prerequisite(s): Sophomore standing or permission of instructor. Every semester.

  ART 241A - Video I
This fundamental video class introduces students to the basics of video & time-based media production and aesthetics.  The course includes screening of video works, in-class demonstrations of equipment and techniques, discussions, and assignments of time-based media concerns in the creations of images and sound track for video and other media.  Using digital video equipment class members produce works that pursue fine art and experimental directions. Prerequisite(s): Sophomore Standing and knowledge of the Macintosh OS. Once a year.

  ART 244 - Creative Imaging
A deeper exploration of Adobe Photoshop designed to make use of advanced techniques of image masking, compositing, creation of graphic elements, use of filters and artistic manipulations. The course is presented in an open format emphasizing experimentation, creative uses of the program and professional practices. A comfortable working knowledge of Photoshop is required as this is an advanced level course. Prerequisite(s): ART 112A or ART 110A or sophomore standing. Every year.

Advanced studio problems in drawing with further emphasis on the figure, color and mixed media. Continued development of individual concepts and personal expression. Prerequisite(s): ART 215 or permission of instructor. Every year.

  ART 317A - Material Studies
Throughout history of art, artists have explored a variety of materials, both high- and low-tech, which best suit their particular form of expression.  Material Studies is a studio class, designed for advanced art students, interested in non-traditional materials as means to express one's view in a 3-D format.  In this class the students will start the semester by exploring 4 materials.  From their initial experiments (done in the first two weeks) students will narrow down their research to 1 material that they will study for the duration of the semester in order to thoroughly examine the physical and conceptual limitations of that material.  In this class the students will utilize a hands-on approach, conduct experiments, and complete a research presentation/ paper on the material of their choice.  This course can be repeated once for grade. Once a year.

  ART 319 - Sculpture II
This course builds upon principles and techniques presented in ART 219. It will further look at the evolution of form and the content or meaning of sculpture. Students will pick 3 materials to focus on such as clay, wood, metal, plaster, wax, fabric, light, and found objects. Prerequisite(s): ART 219A. Once every two years.

  ART 320A - Contemporary Art Practice and Theory
Advanced studio problems that respond to and incorporate relevant contemporary social theory, with an emphasis on the social and theoretical implications of the technological horizon. With a focus on notions of Truth, The Real, Utopia, and The Post Human the course will investigate the meaning of studio practice in a consumer driven society through the visual language of art. Prerequisite(s): Junior Standing. Every year.

  ART 321 - Painting II
Builds upon the principles and techniques presented in Painting I. Further emphasis on color theory, creative design and expression. Through discussion, demonstration and practice, the student becomes acquainted with the physical and conceptual problems of traditional and contemporary painting. Prerequisite(s): ART 221 or permission of instructor. Every year.

  ART 322 - Figure Drawing
Figure Drawing focuses on drawing issues as they relate to working from the nude model while emphasizing proportion, foreshortening, and planar structures of the figure.  Students will work from extended poses, creating drawings with attention to line and value. Prerequisite(s): ART 115A. Once a year.

  ART 331 - Drawing & Painting Outdoors
A studio art class providing the student with the opportunity to focus on the aesthetic and expressive potential of the landscape. Choice of drawing or painting media. The student must acquire necessary equipment and materials and must be motivated to work outdoors. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Every year.

  ART 334 - Introduction to Interactive Web Media
This class explores web as a medium for intellectual and artistic expression. This course will explore techniques ranging from basic website construction to podcasting to virtual presence to "whatever comes next." The class is designed to introduce students to web based technology while researching artists that use the web as a means of expression. (Examples of software used: Dreamweaver, Flash, and audio programs). Prerequisite(s): ART 241A or ART 244. Every two years.

  ART 338A - 2D Digital Animation
This class is an intensive introduction to advanced animation. The students will explore how animation is used in their artistic practice, while examining professional artists using animation as a means to create art. Ecah student will produce three short animations during the semester. (Examples of software used: Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Soundtrack, Final Cut Pro). Prerequisite(s): ART 112A or permission of instructor. Once a year.

  ART 341 - Video II
An intensive video production course that utilizes the green screen, prop building, advanced shooting, and post-production techniques. Ideas and concepts associated with time based art and video will be examined. Sudents will make their own short videos while researching contemporary artists who use video as a means to create art. (Examples of software and techniques used: Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Soundtrack, green screen, props). Prerequisites: ART 241A. Once a year.

  ART 397 - Independent Study in Art
Provides an opportunity to select and study, with individual guidance from a faculty member, a topic of mutual interest in art. A description of the project must be developed and submitted to an Art faculty member of the student's choice. May be repeated up to a maximum of 8 credits. Prerequisite(s): Acceptance of the student proposal and permission of the Department Chairperson. Variable.

  ART 419 - Sculpture III
Advanced problems in Sculpture. This course is a continuation of Sculpture II. Projects are self-directed with the instructor facilitating the development of ideas and technical skills. Prerequisite(s): ART 319 or permission of instructor. Once a year.

  ART 420 - Senior Seminar and Studio Practice
The emphasis of this course is on understanding aesthetics of contemporary art and applications to a personal body of work. An initial portfolio will be developed for Art 430 along with discussion of each student's philosophy and aesthetic influences in relationship to his/her art. Academic and professional options for post BA will be explored. The readings, class discussions, and writing assignments will focus on the contemporary art processes, theory and criticism. Prerequisite(s): Art major and senior standing. Every year.

Advanced problems in Painting. This course is a continuation of Painting II. Projects are self-directed with the instructor facilitating the development of ideas and technical skills. Prerequisite(s): ART 321 or permission of instructor. Every year.

  ART 430 - Senior Project and Studio Practice
Preparation and installation of artwork for public exhibition.  In this course students will continue to develop an artist statement along with readings, class discussions, visiting artist critiques and group critiques on individual bodies of work.  The student is responsible for securing an appropriate exhibition space and other needs contingent to the exhibition of his/her work. Prerequisite(s): Art 420, Art major, and senior standing. Every year.

  ART 441 - New Media
This is an advanced production class, utilizing the green screen, prop building, writing, advanced shooting, compositing, and postproduction techniques. Students will explore the contemporary dialogue surrounding New Media Art. The classroom serves as a laboratory where students can discuss and realize their ideas. (Examples of software and techniques used: Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Soundtrack, green screen, props). Prerequisite(s): ART 341 or ART 334 or ART 338A. Every year.
