MUS 110A - Chorus
	Singing ensemble open to all college students. Rehearsal and performance of a wide range of choral music. Students may not enroll in Chorus (MUS 110A) and Chamber Choir (MUS 210A) in the same semester. May be repeated for up to a total of eight credits. (Pass/Fail only) Every semester. Credit: 1

	MUS 111A - Concert Band I
	Rehearsal and performance of a variety of music for concert band. Open to all students who have experience playing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Seating auditions are held during the first week of school in the fall. May be repeated up to a total of four credits. Prerequisite(s): Previous band experience. Every semester. Credit: 1

	MUS 119A - Ensemble Performance
	Rehearsal and performance of music for a special ensemble other than Community Chorus, Chamber Choir, Concert Band, or Community Orchestra. Example ensembles might be a tour choir, women's chorus, or madrigal group. May be repeated up to a total of eight credits. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Every semester Credit: 1

	MUS 120A - Beginning Applied Music
	Beginning level private lessons in voice or on an instrument. One credit given for 12 half-hour lessons per semester, or two credits for 12 one-hour lessons per semester; may be repeated up to a total of four credits. Additional fee charged for lessons. Prerequisite(s): permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Every semester. Credit: 1-2

	MUS 121A - Piano Class I
	Piano lessons in a group setting using electronic keyboards. Students will develop the ability to read music and play simple pieces with proper technique, as well as learn basic music theory. A course fee will be charged in addition to tuition. Every semester. Credit: 2

	MUS 122A - Piano Class II
	Piano lessons in a group setting using electronic keyboards. This course is a continuation of MUS 121A. A course fee will be charged in addition to tuition. Prerequisite(s): MUS 121A or permission of instructor. Every semester. Credit: 2

	MUS 123A - Group Instrumental Lessons
	Students study an instrument in twelve one-hour lessons over the semester. The group class usually consists of three to five students with the instructor. May be taken up to a total of four credits. Additional fee charged for the lessons. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Every semester. Credit: 2

	MUS 124A - Group Voice Lessons
	Students study voice in twelve one-hour lessons over the semester. The group class usually consists of three to five students with the instructor. May be taken up to a total of four credits. Additional fee charged for the lessons. Prerequisite(s): Permission of music faculty. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Every semester. Credit: 2

MUS 201 - Theory and Aural Skills I

Introduction to scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, rhythm, form, principles of melodic construction, harmony, and voice-leading, using primarily diatonic materials.  While the emphasis is on traditional Western classical music, there will also be some study of popular music styles. Students will write music as well as analyze it.  The study of theory will be supplemented regularly with training and drills in sight singing and ear training. Prerequisite(s): Previous musical experience. Once a year. Credit: 4

	MUS 202 - Theory and Aural Skills II
	A continuation of Theory and Aural Skills I, with the emphasis now on chromatic harmony.  Topics will include secondary functions and modulation and a more in-depth study of formal structural principles.  Work on sight singing and ear training will continue. Prerequisite(s): MUS 201 or permission of instructor. Once a year. Credit: 4

MUS 205 - Songwriting

The composition of songs for the voice, with or without instrumental accompaniment.  Through the study of songs from Schubert to Gershwin to the Beatles and beyond, students will gain insight into the principles of setting lyrics, constructing melodies, and writing accompaniments, while composing songs of their own.  Ideally, all songs will be performed. Prerequisite(s): MUS 201 or permission of instructor. Once a year. Credit: 4

MUS 210A - Chamber Choir

Rehearsal and performance of music from the chamber choral literature. Admission into the choir is through an audition during the first week of school in the fall and requires a commitment for the entire year. The chamber choir performs on and off campus. Although previous choral experience is desirable, all interested students are encouraged to audition. Rehearses three hours weekly in addition to sectionals and voice classes at different times during the year. Because the Chamber Choir will be singing some of the same works as the Community Chorus, students may not enroll in both (MUS 110A and MUS 210A) in the same semester. May be repeated up to a total of four credits, after which students may audition for MUS 310. Prerequisite(s): audition in the fall semester. Every semester. Credit: 1

MUS 211 - Concert Band II

Students who have completed four semesters of MUS 111A (Concert Band I) and wish to continue participating will audition and enroll for MUS 211. It is the same group (see MUS 111A for course description), but MUS 211 students are expected to have attained a higher level of performance through their previous experience and will be held to this higher standard during their audition and throughout the semester. May be repeated up to a total of four credits. Prerequisite(s): four credits of MUS 111A and successful completion of audition. Every semester. Credit: 1

	MUS 212A - Community Orchestra
	Rehearsal and performance of a variety of music from the standard orchestral repertoire. At least one evening concert is given each semester. Because the music is often quite challenging, students are normally expected to have had several years of private lessons. May be repeated up to a total of eight credits. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Every semester. Credit: 1

	MUS 220 - Intermediate Applied Music
	Intermediate-level private lessons in voice or on an instrument. Two credits for 12 one-hour lessons per semester; may be repeated up to a total of eight credits. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of audition and permission of the music faculty. Every semester. Credit: 1-2

	MUS 221 - Piano Class III
	Piano lessons in a group setting using electronic keyboards. This course is a continuation of MUS 122A. A course fee will be charged in addition to tuition. Prerequisite(s): MUS 122A or permission of instructor. Once every two years. Credit: 2

	MUS 277 - Topics in Music
	Intensive study of a specific musical topic not covered in another music course. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Variable. Credit: 1-4

MUS 305 - Advanced Composition

The study and creation of extended compositions for instruments, with or without voice.  Students will have several assigned projects for solo, duet, and  trio, and will also have the opportunity to develop compositional projects of their own.  All compositions will be performed in class, and possibly in a public recital at the end of the semester. Prerequisite(s): MUS 202 or permission of instructor. Every two years.  Credit: 4

MUS 310 - Advanced Chamber Choir

Chamber Choir (MUS 210A) and Advanced Chamber Choir (MUS 310) are the same ensemble. (See MUS 210A for the course description.) Students who have taken MUS 210A for four semesters and wish to continue participation in Chamber Choir will audition for the course under MUS 310. MUS 310 students are expected to build on their previous experience in the chamber choir and will be held to a higher standard during the audition and in their participation. Students may not enroll in MUS 110A and MUS 310 in the same semester. Prerequisite(s): Four credits of MUS 210A. Every semester. Credit: 1

	MUS 320 - Advanced Applied Music
	Advanced-level private lessons in voice or on an instrument. Two credits for 12 one-hour lessons per semester; may be repeated up to a total of eight credits. Prerequisite(s): permission of faculty and at least three credits of MUS 220. Additional fee charged for the lessons. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion audition and permission of the music faculty. Every semester. Credit: 2

	MUS 377 - Topics in Music Theory
	Advanced study of a specialized topic in music theory.  Some possible subjects include the piano music of Chopin, the principles of serial composition, an introduction to Schenkerian analysis, the American experimentalists, and so on.  Prerequisite(s): MUS 202. Once a year. Credit: 4

	MUS 420 - Senior Recital
	Preparation and performance of a half-hour solo recital as the capstone experience of the performance concentration. Includes 12 one-hour lessons. Additional fee charged. Prerequisite(s): MUS 320 and permission of the music faculty. Every semester Credit: 4

	MUS 497 - Independent Study in Music
	Independent work on a special project of the student's choice under the supervision of a member of the music faculty. Acceptance of the proposal by the faculty member must precede registration. Prerequisite(s): Sixteen credits of music courses and permission of instructor. Completed Independent Study Form. Every semester. Credit: 2-4

	MUS 499 - Senior Project in Composition or Theory
	The culminating experience for students in the composition or theory concentration.  Composers will write an extended composition and have it performed; theorists will produce a significant paper on a topic chosen in consultation with the student's advisor. Prerequisite(s): MUS 305 or MUS 377. Every year. Credit: 4
