WST 101S - Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies

This course examines the construction of gender roles and their relation to race and class in the United States, including a focused cross-cultural comparison of ideas about the nature of women and men. Students explore the use of gendered bodies as cultural symbols, women's contributions as agents of social change, the history of feminist movements, and the relationship between academic research and activism. 	WST 250 - Women and Education
	This course explores the role gender plays and has played in education, as well as feminist pedagogical theory and practice. Students will design and carry out a collaborative research project and reflect on that experience in the light of theoretical and historical readings, working toward their own definition of feminist education. 	WST 277 - Special Topics in Women's and Gender Studies

	WST 283H - Fiction by Women
	Study of selected fiction by nineteenth- and twentieth-century American and British women.  This course explores women's literary traditions from feminist perspectives. Prerequisite(s): ENG 100; for students in CWR, ENG, SEN, or ELE-Language Arts, ENG 100 and ENG 181. (Pass/Fail option) Variable. CCP Credit: 4

WST 287H - Poetry by Women

A study of poetry that constitutes a literary tradition for women, beginning with tribal poetry and Enheduannas hymns to Inanna and progressing to the work of contemporary women poets. Considerable class time will be devoted to close reading of individual poems and their gendered relationship to the cultures they both mirror and reinvent. Students will undertake an in-depth study of a contemporary poet and will develop a portfolio that defines their own poetic heritage.    Prerequisite(s): ENG 100; for students in CWR, ENG, SEN, or ELE-Language Arts, ENG 100 and ENG 181. WST 290 - Cultural Studies of Gender and Sexuality

This course explores ideas about the origins and meaning of categories of sexual orientation and their relation to gender. Views from the arts, humanities, social sciences and biological sciences will be included, including analyses of the visual, written and verbal rhetoric of resistance to mainstream formulations of sexuality and gender. Students will encounter representations of gender and sexuality in our own and other cultures. Prerequisites: WST 101S or permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Variable. CCP Credit: 4

WST 330 - Contemporary Feminist Thought

In this course, students examine feminist thought from an interdisciplinary perspective. The course investigates core questions that have led feminist theory to focus on the relationship between identity and difference, biology and social construction, sex and gender, and public and private spheres of action. Race, class, gender, and cross-cultural perspectives are emphasized. Prerequisite(s): WST 101S and second year standing, or permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Spring semester. Credit: 4

WST 360 - Women and Science/Technology

This course explores women's interactions with science and technology, including the effect of science and technology on women and the role of women in shaping the sciences. Students will encounter the work of major feminist historians of science and consider the effect of feminist critiques on the conduct of science. Prerequisite(s): WST 101S and second year standing, or permission of instructor. WST 370 - Motherhood

This course studies the mother/child relationship within a focused comparison between two cultures as depicted in memoir, myth, fiction, and the literature of biology and anthropology.  Students explore ideologies of motherhood and their pervasive effect on actual mother/child relationships and undertake a research and activism project that relates that institution of motherhood to social policy. Prerequisite(s): WST 101S and second year standing, or permission of instructor. WST 396 - Internship in Women's and Gender Studies

The internship in women's and gender studies offers students the opportunity to apply their understanding of the dynamics of gender and social change to the world at large while exploring possibilities for their own careers. Interns will design and carry out a project in ongoing consultation with a faculty advisor and a supervisor from a community organization. Interns will write a final paper and make a public presentation reflecting on the internship in light of their academic work in women's and gender studies. Prerequisite(s): WST 101S, WST 330. Every semester. Credit: 4-12

	WST 397 - Advanced Independent Study in Women's and Gender Studies
	An advanced study of topics not already covered by regular course offerings in women's and gender studies. The course may be repeated for credit when different topics are considered. Prerequisite(s): WST 101S or permission from instructor.  Completion of Independent Study Form. Every semester. Credit: 2-4

WST 480 - Capstone Seminar in Women's and Gender Studies

In the first part of the seminar, students will synthesize knowledge gained throughout their women's and gender studies coursework, using their program portfolio to produce a reflective essay. In the second half, students will plan and execute an original project on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor, conduct focused research on that topic, and ultimately publish the project to the campus community via video, audio, additions to the Women's and Gender Studies website, or presentations to classes or at conferences. This course is required for women's and gender studies majors and minors. Prerequisite(s): WST 101S, WST 330, a total of 12 (for minors) or 16 (for majors) Women's and Gender Studies credits, and third- or fourth-year standing. Spring semester. Credit: 4

WST 490 - Women's and Gender Studies Thesis

Seniors in the Women's and Gender Studies major may complete a senior thesis under the direction of a faculty supervisor as the culmination of their Women's and Gender Studies experience. The thesis makes an original contribution to the field of women's and gender studies scholarship, demonstrating high levels of competency in research, analysis, and writing. The thesis must be presented to and defended before the Women's and Gender Studies Council. Prerequisite(s): Major or Minor in Women's and Gender Studies, fourth-year standing, WST 101S, WST 330, a total of 16 elective Women's and Gender Studies credits, and approval of WST Council and Director. Every semester. Credit: 4-8
