  FRE 101H - Elementary French I

An introduction to french that emphasizes basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills within a matrix of general cultural studies. Intended for students with no previous background in the language, or not more than one year of high school French. (Pass/Fail option) Every year.

  FRE 102H - Elementary French II

A continuation of FRE 101H, emphasizing further development of basic communicative skills. Prerequisite(s): FRE 101H or placement exam. (Pass/Fail option) Every year.

  FRE 191 - Conversation at French Table

Students attend three French tables per week in the dining hall with French assistants. Conversations are conducted in French in order to increase fluency. Course may be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: FRE 102H or permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail only) Every semester.

  FRE 201H - Intermediate French

Emphasis on oral and written fluency through readings, discussion and reports. Classes conducted in French, and materials deal largely with French and Canadian culture. Prerequisite(s): FRE 102H or placement exam. Every year.

  FRE 202H - Readings and Composition

This course will be an introduction to literary genres, literary analysis, and expository writing in French. Reading and writing will be emphasized. Prerequisite(s): FRE 201H or permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Every two years.

  FRE 206H - Oral Communication and Culture

This course includes reading and writing but will emphasize oral communication through listening exercises, expository reports, and class discussions about Francophone culture.  It aims to develop linguistic fluency and an appreciation of Francophone culture. Prerequisite(s): FRE 201H or placement exam. (Pass/Fail option) Every two years.

  FRE 277 - Topics in French

The study of a specialized topic not offered in the usual curriculum. Varies.

  FRE 301 - French Film

This course offers a thematic and/or historic study of French culture from the perspective of film. The class will emphasize oral communication through discussion and presentation of assigned films. It will also strengthen expository and analytical writing in French. Prerequisite(s): FRE 201 or permission of instructor. Pass/fail option. Every two years.

  FRE 306 - Francophone Literature

Reading and interpretation of selected Francophone writers from the Americas, the Caribbean and Africa. Major political, social, and literary forms are surveyed, with emphasis on class discussion and analysis of representative works. (Pass/Fail option) Prerequisite(s): FRE 201H or placement exam. Every two years.

  FRE 377 - Topics in French Literature

Intensive study of an individual topic, genre, period, literary movement, or author. This course can be taken more than once since the topic varies. Prerequisite(s): FRE 201H, or placement exam. (Pass/Fail option) Varies.

  FRE 397 - Independent Study in French

Offers the student the possibility of advanced work in French, under the direction of a faculty member. Selected topics may include aspects of the language, literature, and civilization of France or of other French-speaking areas. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Varies.
