  INV 186 - Innovation Engineering I: Create

This course provides a systematic approach to creativity by providing students with the skills and knowledge to generate innovative ideas in any field. Students develop a repertoire of tools that can be used to generate meaningfully unique ideas through the use of stimuli, diversity, and researching technological, economic, social and cultural trends. Students examine case histories that demonstrate how social and cultural contexts and human institutions have been influenced by innovative individuals. The course also examines writing as a method of prototyping through the clarity of professional writing, the precision of technical writing, and the expressiveness of creative writing. Every year.

INV 286 - Innovation Engineering II: Communicate

The first part of this course continues the examination of the clarity of professional writing, the precision of technical writing, and the expressiveness of creative writing, initially addressed in INV 186. Attention to narrative power of visual imagery as well as text; emphasis on authentic writing, writing as a method of prototyping, and technology translation. Students learn to communicate the benefit, the uniqueness, and the credibility of a concept. Students work with innovators to explore and translate the benefits of technical and specialized ideas to a target audience.

The second half of the course introduces the process of turning an idea into a prototype in order to find the flaws of a design quickly and inexpensively. Topics include application of the scientific method to the prototyping process, sales forecasting and estimating and developing business models. Prerequisite(s): INV 186. Every year.
