MUS 210A - Chamber Choir |
Rehearsal and performance of music from the chamber choral literature. Admission into the choir
is through an audition during the first week of school in the fall and requires a commitment for
the entire year. The chamber choir performs on and off campus and in some years will tour in the
U.S. or abroad. Although previous choral experience is desirable, all interested students are
encouraged to audition. Rehearses three hours weekly in addition to sectionals and voice classes
at different times during the year. Because the Chamber Choir will be singing some of the same
works as the Community Chorus, students may not enroll in both (MUS 110 and MUS 210) in
the same semester. May be repeated up to a total of six credits, after which students may audition
for MUS 310. Prerequisite(s): audition in the fall semester. Fall and Spring.

MUS 211 - Concert Band II |
Students who have completed four semesters of MUS 111 (Concert Band I) and wish to
continue participating will audition and enroll for MUS 211. It is the same group (see MUS 111
for course description), but MUS 211 students are expected to have attained a higher level of
performance through their previous experience and will be held to this higher standard during
their audition and throughout the semester. May be repeated up to a total of six credits.

MUS 237A - Music: 1900 to 1930 |
The years 1900-1930 were a remarkable time. Rarely, within a few decades, has such a wide
variety of musical styles coexisted. This diversity will be approached through a study of styles
and works such as the primitivism of Stravinsky''s "Petrushka," the expressionism of
Schoenberg''s "Pierrot Lunaire," the romanticism of Strauss''s "Der Rosenkavalier," not to mention
ragtime, blues, and the birth of jazz. Studied works will be considered chronologically and within
their socio-political context. As much as possible, the class will incorporate live performance by

MUS 238A - Men, Women, and Pianos |
This course will focus on the piano repertoire and its composers from Mozart through the present
with particular emphasis on the great piano tradition of the romantic and early twentieth century
eras. In the same spirit as the book Men, Women and Pianos by Arthur Loesser, the music,
composers, and performers studied will be considered within a socio-political perspective. As
much as possible, there will be live performances by the instructor or quest artists. Students will
be expected to attend concerts outside of class, including, in some semesters, a trip to Portland or

MUS 301 - Theory and Analysis III |
An introduction to the theoretical aspects of classical music since 1900. Some of the topics to be
covered include serial composition and atonality; pentatonic, whole-tone, octatonic, and other
alternative scales; twentieth century developments in rhythmic complexity; and new approaches
to musical structure. Selected twentieth century compositions will be analyzed in detail.
