Interdisciplinary Studies - Health Information Systems

Bachelor of Arts: Interdisciplinary Studies - Health Information Systems

Interdisciplinary Studies recognizes that academic disciplines do not exist in a vacuum, that to fully understand a subject one must move beyond the silos of the individual disciplines and integrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that are to be found in related, complementary academic subjects. Thus the student will study at least two different subjects in the Interdisciplinary program, looking for connections between them.

About the Concentration:

The Health Information Systems concentration is shared between the departments of Business, Economics, Health and Computer Science. This program is designed to develop skills and a knowledge base that will allow students to pursue careers in health and information technology, including informatics, both here in Maine and elsewhere. The focus of the concentration is to develop specific competencies, knowledge and business, programming and computer skills that will facilitate career progression in the health information systems sector, including the State Government, State Agencies and the Private sector.

Learning Goals:

  • Students will be able to adapt knowledge, skills and responsibilities to new settings and questions.
  • Students will be able to understand the functional areas of accounting, marketing, finance, management, and economics.
  • Students will be able to understand the legal and social environment of business.
  • Students will be able to use business tools.
  • Students will be able to use information literacy tools.
  • Students will be able to communicate effectively.
  • Students will be able to work effectively in teams and/or groups, and will be able to lead such groups.
  • Students will be able to design and implement information technology systems used in the health care industry.
  • Students will be able to administer information technology systems used in the health care industry.
  • Students will be able to assess individual and community needs for health requirements.
  • Students will be able to plan, implement and evaluate health strategies, interventions and programs.
  • Students will be able to conduct evaluation and research related to health.
