This program concentrates on developing artistic talent while examining how art relates to the world. During the student's first year they will take a core group of art foundation classes, after which the student must submit a portfolio of work in order to be formally accepted into the Major. Once accepted, the student then picks a concentration (Drawing, New Media, Painting, or Sculpture) based upon their talents and interests. The combination of courses within a concentration is created to: inspire creative thinking, to develop the ability to discuss art and its relationship to other fields. In this collaborative program offered jointly by UMF and the University of Maine at Augusta, students take small classes, in a variety of media and subject matter, taught by practicing artists on both campuses. (For information about UMA courses, consult the UMA catalogue.) The program will culminate in the exhibition of a senior project that will be viewed by faculty, students, and the public. Students go on to careers in areas such as gallery directing, advertising, and art education; or to graduate programs at other universities.
