FRE 101H - Elementary French I |
An introduction to French that emphasizes basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills within a matrix of general cultural studies. Intended for students with no previous background in the language, or not more than one year of high school French. Pass/Fail option. Every year.

FRE 191 - Conversation at French Table |

FRE 201H - Intermediate French |
An intermediate course designed to build and expand upon the skills acquired in French 101H-102H. Conducted in French, this course includes grammar review and practice as well as vocabulary building. Emphasis is placed on the oral and written application of the French language through the study and discussion of authentic texts and cultural content. Prerequisite: FRE 102H or permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail only). Every year.

This course includes reading and writing but will emphasize oral communication through listening exercises, expository reports, and class discussions about Francophone culture. FRE 300 - Advanced French for Communication |
In this course, students review and expand on the basic structures of French, with particular emphasis on difficult grammatical aspects. They also work toward developing a more extensive vocabulary. The class will include intensive practice to strengthen oral and written expression. Readings may include literary and cultural texts, and assignments may include oral presentations and both creative and academic writing assignments. Prerequisite(s): FRE 201 (Pass/Fail Option) Every two years.

FRE 301 - French Film |
This course offers a thematic and/or historic study of French culture from the perspective of film. The class will emphasize oral communication through discussion and presentation of assigned films. FRE 302 - People & Cultures of the Francophone World |
This course will expose students to various aspects of the Francophone World by examining history, culture, customs and popular culture of people who have been in contact with the French colonial past. Students will learn how the Francophone identities have been shaped in different parts of the world including Québec, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and West Indies. Students will engage with different approaches to cultural productions including films, texts, music, and images. Although, the focus of this course will be on people and cultures of the Francophone world, students will learn how France and the Francophone world engage with each other in the 21st century. Prerequisite: FRE 201H. Pass/Fail option. Every three years.

FRE 303 - People & Cultures of France |
This course will focus on contemporary France. Students will have the opportunity to appreciate the production of French culture as well as various current artistic and intellectual movements through texts such as literature, film, digital media, and newspaper articles. In order to better understand contemporary debates in French society today, this course will examine essential historical events that have shaped modern France, such as the French Revolution, the colonial empire, WWII, the Indochina War, and the Algerian War. The course will also examine France in relationship to the United States, the Francophone world, and the European community. Prerequisite: FRE 201H. Pass/Fail option. Every three years.
