Students may choose a minor field of study, commonly called a minor, along with their major. A minor usually consists of 20 credits of study. Minors are optional, but many students find that a minor is helpful in providing greater career opportunities after graduation. The requirements for the various minors are listed within individual majors as well as in this section.

Following are the requirements for official University of Maine at Farmington minors. Contact the chairperson of the department offering the minor for an application.

*Starred courses have pre-requisites not included in the minor requirements.

Data Analytics

The Data Analytics minor is comprised of computer science, statistics, and technology-related courses to provide students exposure to a variety of relevant and in-demand skills to better prepare them for post-undergraduate work. In addition to traditional coursework in computer science and mathematics, students will customize a selection of technology modules best suited to their major and their plans after graduation.

COS 140  Introduction to Computer Science   4

MAT 120M Introductory Statistics 4
or
MAT 220 Data Analysis

MAT 228 Applied Statistics for Non-Math Majors 4
or
MAT 328* Statistical Models

TEC modules** 8

* MAT 328 satisfies the requirement for a second statistics course for the minor, but students should be aware that it has prerequisites of MAT 220 and MAT 251. MAT 228 is the appropriate choice for those who choose MAT 120 as their first statistics course.

* *TEC Modules are 1 or 2 credit courses focused on a particular technology skill. They are offered entirely online, and there are several to choose from to best complement the student’s major.

A minimum of one third of the required credits must be earned at UMF for a minor to be awarded.
